Conference Overview

Oxford, the City of Dreaming Spires, is world-famous for its University and rich history. For over 800 years, it has been a home to royalty and scholars, and in April 2013 it was home to TEFI7, where tourism scholars inspired by the atmosphere of historical knowledge and unique architecture, passionately engaged in and contributed to discussions about the future of tourism education.  TEFI7 was held in Worcester College one of the oldest Oxford colleges with glorious parkland and its very own lake. Our ability to think progressively, rooted in historic knowledge, was enhanced by this very special location.TEFI7 Organisers

Our theme focused on the capacity of tourism education to contribute to global citizenship and to create graduates who can lead lives of consequence.  This is increasingly acknowledged as important by educators and industry stakeholders keen to make a difference and fulfill their obligations to global sustainability. Tourism education, its institutions, academics and students, are at the centre of this challenge by virtue of their contribution to industry’s pool of human and intellectual capital. With head, heart and hands we must lead.

The proceedings, resources, presentations and links on this page are the collective outputs from the participants of TEFI7. It was the passion and energy of the participants that made this conference such a success. So thank you from the TEFI7 Conference Committee!

Framing the Other – A short film and discussion

Willem Timmers joined us via Skype to present his short film "Framing the Other". An provocative film very useful for teaching, it comes with a manual Training the Other: How to use the film as a basis for discussions, teaching and inspiration.

The Mursi tribe lives in the basin of the Omo River in the south of the east African state of Ethiopia. The women are known for placing large plates in their lower lips and wearing enormous, richly decorated earrings. Every year hundreds of Western tourists come to see the unusually adorned natives; posing for camera-toting visitors has become the main source of income for the Mursi. To make more money, they embellish their “costumes” and finery in such a manner that less of their original authentic culture remains. FRAMING THE OTHER contrasts the views of Mursi women and those of Dutch tourists preparing for a meeting. This humorous and at the same time chilling film shows the destructive impact tourism has on traditional communities.

More information including how to purchase the film can be found on the Framing the Other website.
